How can I tell if my Stone surface is sealed?

There is a simple test that can be performed in order for you to check if your stone, concrete or tiled floor has been sealed correctly, this is called the water test. Pour a little water onto the surface and level out with your finger and observe. If the water is absorbed then your surface is in need of sealing as soon as possible. However, if the water turns into small balls and is repelled then your surface has been sealed.

STONE SEALANT

Why should you clean your surface?

Natural and manmade stone products contain dirt, residues, dust and grime in their pores. These pores need to be cleaned well before any sealant is applied to the surface of the stone. If dirt etc is trapped under the sealer sooner or later it will cause a milky white residue between the top of the stone and the underside of the sealer. The only way to remove this is to remove the stone sealer and clean. For all the professional cleaning and sealing products you will need click here

How to clean a stone surface

The stone should be hoovered as well as possible and wherever possible a proprietary residue remover should be used to clean the surface of the natural stone. We recommend the use of the DS21 for natural polished surfaces available from www.sealer-seal-sealant.co.uk. Click on any of the links in this page and go to the "cleaners" page for more information. The cleaners can usually be diluted for cleaning different stone surfaces and you usually need a stronger dilution to clean unpolished marble, granite and terracotta than for polished and honed stone as well as limestone, sandstone and slate. After the dirt has been removed the stone can be sealed.

Why should you seal a stone surface and when?

STONE SEALAll natural stone products will stain almost immediately after spilling anything on them. Sealing a stone surface will be effective against permanent damage but spills should still be cleaned up as quickly as possible. There are different sealing methods for different natural stone surfaces. For more information on the best methods of sealing your natural stone floor and maintaining it once it has been sealed visit our recommended sealers page click here

Sandstone, Terracotta and Limestone must be sealed before the tiles are laid and grouted. All are very porous and will soak up stained water from the adhesive, grout etc very quickly. Terracotta in particular is immensely porous and should be sealed front, back and sides before laying.
Limestone is also particularly vulnerable and gloves should be worn when handling it as finger marks can stain the surface and will not necessarily show until its too late. Granite, Marble, Slate and Travertine are sealed on all edges and the top after being laid and grouted. These floors must be thoroughly cleaned prior to sealing. How often should you re-seal?

Sealing stone, when done properly, should not need repeating for at least 5 years and to reseal a natural stone floor special stone seal removers can be bought. visit our stone cleaners page click here. A natural stone floor can keep its natural finish for a lifetime if looked after properly, make sure you have the right products for your natural stone floor.

Sealing other stone features

Aside from flooring surfaces you may find a great deal of other stone surfaces within a property such as stairs, tables, pilers and fireplaces. Fireplaces can be particularly susceptible to staining from carbon deposits (for open fires) and also UV damage. These surfaces should also be sealed to prevent staining and damage using the methods mentioned above and products available from www.sealer-seal-sealant.co.uk

limestone polishingNatural stone is a beautiful material which is in very popular demand at the moment. Durable and if looked after will last for a long time. Unfortunately most jobs we are called out to are the result of sloppy installation and poor finishing when laying the stone.  All stone, especially Natural stone needs to be sealed with a high quality impregnator before a job is properly completed. Without proper finishing and sealing the result will be a floor which absorbs dirt and liquids and will be impossible to clean.

Worse still customers are not given or advised on the correct cleaning materials to use on their newly laid stone floors, and most will use cheap shop bought cleaners or waxes which will not clean deep into the pores of the stone, causing a dirty appearance which will worsen over time and cause further damage to the stone's surface. Unfortunately the only way to restore the stone to its original appearance is to grind down the surface of the stone and re-polish, revealing a new stone surface.

In this example to the right, the stone was stained, dulled and become dirty over a period of time. limestone repair

So how did we restore it?

Firstly we removed the surface of the stone with diamond abrasives upto a 400 grade. Stains were removed with stain removers and holes were re-filled with coloured epoxy resin mixed to match the colour and tone. Lastly the floors were sealed with a high quality stone sealer / impregnator. This sealer will last upto 8 years atleast. The sealer will ensure for easy maintenance and cleaning, and will prevent stains or dirt penetrating the stone. It is also important to carry on cleaning the stone with a high quality stone soap which will deepen the colour and help protect the stone's surface, aswell as clean effectively.

How can you prevent your stone from becoming dirty, staining, dulling or having to go through an expensive restoration process?

The most important thing you can do is to seal your stone. This is absolutley vital and can not be recommended enough. It is also important that you seal with a high quality impregnator. Secondly is ensuring you clean with a proper and professional use stone cleaner, especially designed for stone. If you do this, then you will ensure for the longest possible life of your stone.

SERVICES WE OFFER

Grinding

Grinding is the process by which the surface of the stone is sanded by the use of diamond pads to remove the surface of the stone. This process is usually recommended when the stone has lips or deep down scratches.

Honing

Honing is the process of smoothing the stone with diamond pads). Honing is performed to remove light scratches but will not remove lippage. Gives an egg shell finish to the surface of the stone..

Polishing

The high shine observed on stone, as picture above is the result of finishing with fine diamond pads. Then finishing with powdered polishing chemicals. Leaves a deep down shine.

Crystallization

The crystallization process consists of spraying a liquid onto the stone floor and buffing it in with steel wirewool pads.  Heat is generated through abrasion using a heavy polishing machine producing a surface shine on the stone. This will protect the surface of the stone and add a glossy non slip shine.

Maintenance

In order to keep your stone appearance and protect it from staining, scratching and dulling we are able to visit you on regular maintenance basis. Our maintenance visits will help to keep your stone looking like new for many years to come and at a fraction of the cost of the first process.
